Perfume Tester Boxes in Pakistan: How to Try Before You Buy

8 min read

Buying perfume online in Pakistan has one obvious problem: you cannot smell a screen. A product page can say “saffron, oud, amber”, but not whether that saffron turns sharp on your skin, or whether the oud is the smoky kind your father wears or the clean, woody kind you wanted. So people buy blind and hope, test six scents on paper strips at a mall until everything smells the same, or buy a tester box.

We sell perfume, including a tester box, so read this with that in mind. Here is what a tester box is, what the Pakistani options cost today, where each one is better, and how to use one so the money is not wasted.

The key insight: a tester box is not a cheaper perfume, it is cheaper mistakes

A full bottle of a local extrait typically costs somewhere between Rs 2,000 and Rs 8,000, depending on the brand and the size. If you buy the wrong one, that whole amount is gone; the bottle sits on a shelf, or gets passed to a cousin. A tester box costs a fraction of that and lets you wear several scents for a full day each, in your own weather, on your own skin.

That matters more here than almost anywhere. A perfume that smells soft in an air-conditioned shop can turn loud at 38°C, or vanish within two hours on dry winter skin in Lahore. Paper strips do not sweat or sit in traffic. The only honest test is wearing it through a normal day, and a tester box is the cheapest way to do that with more than one scent.

So judge a tester box on two things: the price per scent, and whether the samples are big enough to wear properly at least once or twice. A cheap box with one spray of each is close to useless; generous minis chosen for you might not include the scents you care about.

Tester boxes and discovery sets in Pakistan: what they cost today

We checked each brand’s own website on 28 October 2026. Prices change often, especially around sales, so treat these as a snapshot and check the link before ordering. Where a brand does not state a figure, we have said so rather than guessing.

J. Discovery Set for Her1010 ml bottlesFixed setRs 8,500Rs 850

A few honest observations from that table.

  • J. wins on volume, by a distance. Ten 10 ml bottles is 100 ml of perfume in total. That is not really a tester box; it is a set of small bottles you can keep wearing for months. If you already like J.’s style and want variety rather than a test, it is good value per millilitre. It is also the most expensive entry point.
  • Colish is the clearest about what you get. Both sets state five 2 ml spray vials and name the scents. A 2 ml vial is roughly enough for several days of wear, which is what a test needs. The trade-off is that the scents are chosen for you.
  • THE NOTE. lets you build your own, like ours, and was marked sold out on its collection page when we first looked on 25 October. Its full bottles are also sold in a 15 ml size (Apollo, for example, is listed at Rs 1,699 for 15 ml and Rs 4,249 for 50 ml), which is another sensible way to try one scent without committing to a big bottle.
  • Ours is the cheapest per scent at Rs 300, and you choose all five. Our product page does not currently state the vial size, which is a fair criticism and something we should fix. What it does say is that each vial is the same extrait as the full bottle, not a weaker sample blend.

Colish also lists single 10 ml travel sizes of many scents, mostly between Rs 1,500 and Rs 1,880 when we checked, which is worth knowing if you already have one favourite in mind.

How to use a tester box properly

Most people waste a tester box by spraying all five on the first evening and deciding nothing. Here is a better method, whichever brand you buy from.

1. One scent per day, and wear it for the whole day

Put one scent on in the morning, on clean, moisturised skin: pulse points on the neck and inner wrists are enough. Do not test two at once; they blend in the air and you will not know which one you are smelling by afternoon. Our guide on how to apply perfume so it lasts in Pakistan’s heat covers where and how much to spray.

2. Judge it at three moments, not one

The first ten minutes are the top notes: citrus, spice, the bright part. They fade fast and are the least important. Smell it again after an hour, when the heart has opened, and again after five or six hours. The scent you will live with is the dry-down, not the opening. A lot of people fall for a lovely bergamot opening and end up owning a perfume whose base they dislike.

3. Write one line about it each evening

Something as simple as “Day 3, Calmera: liked it most at lunch, faded by 7 pm, my sister asked what it was”. After five days, the decision usually makes itself.

4. Test in the conditions you will actually wear it

For the office, wear the sample to work; for weddings, try it on an evening out. Heat, crowds and air-conditioning all change how a perfume behaves.

Choosing which five to try

If the box lets you choose, do not pick five versions of the same thing. Pick across families so the test actually tells you something about your taste. For example, from our own range:

  • One oud: Oud de Pura (rose, saffron, cardamom over oud, sandalwood and amber; Rs 2,799 for 40 ml, Rs 5,599 for 100 ml) or Safaros (saffron, nutmeg and lavender over oud, patchouli and musk; Rs 2,599 for 40 ml, Rs 4,799 for 100 ml).
  • One fresh, for daytime heat: Kesem d’Or (grapefruit, ginger, ambroxan; Rs 2,499 for 40 ml, Rs 4,799 for 100 ml) or Vackra (lemon, bergamot, cypress, cedar; Rs 2,199 for 40 ml, Rs 4,899 for 100 ml).
  • One floral: Fleur Blossom (peony, osmanthus, rose, pink pepper; Rs 2,699 for 40 ml, Rs 4,999 for 100 ml) or Calmera (Earl Grey tea, freesia, jasmine, iris and musk; Rs 2,199 for 40 ml, Rs 4,399 for 100 ml).
  • One sweet or gourmand: Aurélis (almond, coffee, tuberose, tonka and cacao; Rs 2,599 for 40 ml, Rs 4,599 for 100 ml).
  • One wildcard: something you would never pick from the description alone, such as Magnes (ginger, lavender, black vanilla and leather; Rs 2,799 for 40 ml, Rs 5,599 for 100 ml). The wildcard is often the one people end up buying.

The same logic works for any brand’s build-your-own box: one from each family, plus one surprise.

When a tester box is not worth it

If you already know the scent you want, just buy the bottle. If you only want to try one perfume, a single 10 ml or 15 ml size is better than a five-scent box. And for a gift, a set of proper minis like J.’s often lands better than plain vials. A tester box earns its place when you are choosing between several scents, are new to a brand, or have been burned by a blind buy before.

Where we sit

Our Build Your Own Tester Box is five scents for Rs 1,500. You can choose all five, choose a few and let us pick the rest, or ask us to surprise you. The vials contain the same extrait as our full bottles, blended at 35–40% perfume oil. Delivery is free across Pakistan, cash on delivery is available, and the product page states a 15-day return window for unopened boxes. Our full bottles come in two sizes, 40 ml and 100 ml.

Where others do better: J. gives you far more perfume per set, Colish is clearer about exactly how much is in each vial, and THE NOTE. and Colish both sell small single bottles, which we do not. Where we are stronger: the lowest price per scent of the sets we checked, and you choose every scent. If that balance suits you, the box is there. If it does not, any of the sets above is a better start than buying a 100 ml bottle blind.

Frequently asked questions

What is a perfume tester box?

A set of small vials, usually four to ten scents, so you can wear each on your skin before buying a full bottle. Some brands let you pick; others sell a fixed selection.

How much does a perfume tester box cost in Pakistan?

Of the sets we checked on 28 October 2026, prices ranged from Rs 1,500 (five scents, Scent PûrÂ) to Rs 8,500 (ten 10 ml bottles, J.). Colish’s two discovery sets were Rs 2,250 and Rs 3,000, and THE NOTE.’s four-sample box was Rs 1,799.

Are tester vials the same perfume as the full bottle?

They should be, but check the product page. Ours states that each vial is the same extrait as the full bottle. Be wary of sellers on marketplaces offering “testers” of international designer perfumes at very low prices, as authenticity is hard to verify.

How many days should I test a perfume before buying?

At least one full day per scent, and ideally two if you are torn. Judge it after an hour and again after five or six hours, not just at the first spray.

Is a tester box a good gift?

It can be, especially for someone who likes trying new things. If you want the gift to feel more finished, a set of proper small bottles usually lands better than plain vials.

Should I buy 40 ml or 100 ml after testing?

If you loved it and will wear it most days, 100 ml usually costs less per millilitre. If you liked it but are not certain, 40 ml is a safer second step. Our article on what perfume actually costs in Pakistan breaks down price per millilitre in more detail.
